Anatomy of a Salutation →
“If they wish to cultivate your acquaintance, the fact will soon be evident from the tone of their letters to you. Then, but not until then, you may respond, if you wish to, with proportionate friendliness.”

I agonize over this stuff.
dear guy down the hall,
sorry you had so much trouble getting into your apartment late last night. i could tell it was upsetting to you, what with all the banging and shouting and cursing. i could also tell that that was upsetting to one of the other tenants, when he started shouting at you. i know these locks get stuck easily, and it’s really frustrating, but maybe next time you should try...
dear pdx,
you can have your weather back now, if i can have mine.

dear kitties,
If you were going to remove my wallet from my bag last night and hide it between the couch cushions, why didn’t you replace it with one of your toys, or at least something entertaining? Then I could have tried to pay for my coffee with that.
